@Anonymous & Kenneth love ipod touch: After downloading it you need to launch iTunes, shift-click the "Restore" button, and select the iPod Touch 2.1 firmware file. Then your iPod Touch will be updated.

yea i have the same problem, when i click on the link i dont get the firmware i get a zip file with all of the parts inside and im not sure how to compress it into the .ipsw file

On a Mac, hold down the "option" button and click on the Restore button in iTunes. Then select the .ipsw file. It should start configuring to 2.1. Then follow the steps to restoring your files by syncing with iTunes.
I cant find the .ipsw file.

when you have downloaded the software you go in i tunes and click on your i pod.it will open the summary page.You press SHIFT continuously and click on update.then a window will appear and you chose the software that you downloaded.it will take some time

For anyone finding just a folder and various files inside instead of the needed .IPSW file, you have to use FIREFOX instead of SAFARI as safari auto unzips the file and you dont want that to happen.
I'm on a pc using itunes 8 trying to update my itouch 1.1.5 to 2.1. I downloaded the file, went on itunes, shift update, and chose the file. It extracted but keeps freezing on the Updating bar. What exactly do you have to do? Shift restore leads to an error 5.

I found it... after downloading 2.1 you just have to go to itune in the i-touch section and in order to upgrade it you must press CTRL and SHIFT at the same time and then clic on the upgrade icon... once that done you have to select the 2.1 firmware file and open it... ;)

(I updated from 1.15 to 2.1 using windows and iTunes version 7)
Don't unzip or do anything with the file you downloaded. It should work!

when i try to upgradefrom 1.1.5 it will extract the files but after when it says preparing to update ipod it turns ipod off and when it reconnects it it says the ipod could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (5).

i dont know what the problem is but whenever u restore or upgdate ipods they have all the songs movies photos etc. removed unless its in the system folder of the ipod
